Youth-On-Age/Piggy Back Plant
Tolmiea menziesii
This native perennial grows mainly in wetlands and shady woods. When in bloom, the tiny, brownish-purple flowers grow in an alternate pattern on a long thin stem. This plant's common names come from its nature of budding new leaves from the bases of the older leaves.
The genus Tolmiea was named for William Fraser Tolmie, a Hudson Bay Company physician in 1832 who was a collector of Northwest botanical species.
The species menziesii refers to the first European botanist and explorer of the Pacific Northwest coast, Archibald Menzies.
